Mitigation credits & discounts
Some states mandate separate wildfire mitigation credits in rating plans; others run voluntary expedited discount programs or leave credits entirely to carrier filings.
California — mandatory Safer from Wildfires credits
If wildfire risk affects rates, 10 CCR § 2644.9 requires the rating plan to reflect each mandatory community and property mitigation factor with a separate discount/credit. CDI FAQ materials state carriers should expect at least a $1 premium reduction per mandatory factor (rounding up if the modeled credit is under $1). Free inspection options apply when insurers require inspections; CAL FIRE / local fire department inspections must be accepted as verification.
Common qualifying actions include Firewise USA / Fire Risk Reduction Community status, Class-A roof, enclosed eaves, fire-resistant vents, multipane windows/shutters, 5-ft ember zone and noncombustible fencing materials, under-deck clearing, outbuilding distance, PRC 4291 defensible space, and 6-inch noncombustible vertical clearance. See CDI Safer from Wildfires.
Colorado & Oregon — disclosure + mitigation notice
Colorado HB 25-1182 ties model use to disclosure of mitigation discounts and incorporation of property- and community-level mitigation (or discounts). Oregon ORS 742.277 requires wildfire-related cancel/nonrenew/rate notices to describe mitigation the insured could take and potential discounts when premium increases. Neither fully clones California’s mandatory factor-by-factor schedule in the materials reviewed.
Nevada — voluntary expedited discounts
Nevada’s Wildfire Mitigation Incentive Program lets insurers seek expedited prior approval for listed personal-lines discounts (Class-A roof, hardening items, community programs such as Firewise / Fire Adapted / Ready Set Go!). Insurers are not required to adopt. Published upper bounds for the expedited track are relative to total premium — read the DOI PDF.
IBHS & documentation
IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home / Plus and community programs (Firewise USA; California Fire Risk Reduction Communities) appear repeatedly in DOI consumer guidance. Active exterior defense documentation (including FireShield installation packets noted on vendor public pages) can support an underwriting file but does not guarantee a credit. Keep dated photos, invoices, and written scopes.
